Turning Regulatory Disruption Into Cleaning Process Advantages

The Challenge

When the U.S. ban on Asahiklin AK-225 took effect, an aerospace contractor responsible for designing, building, and overhauling On-Board Oxygen-Generating Systems (OBOGS) suddenly lost the only Navy-approved solvent it had ever used for gaseous and liquid-oxygen hardware.

Complicating matters, their workflow relied on a mixed fleet of Just-Rite sprayers, ultrasonic tanks, soak stations, and a Rapid-Vap unit, all qualified around AK-225’s physical properties. The team still had to meet NAVSEA O₂-cleaning requirements (MIL-STD-1330) for the stainless-steel components that sit inside more than 3,800 aircraft.

The customer needed a designed method that satisfied Navy need for cleanliness verification as part of their oxygen-cleaning spec. The new method needed to preserve production throughput and avoid new capital spend. Any new chemistry had to match or exceed the legacy solvent’s cleaning performance without forcing expensive equipment changes or extended downtime.

The Solution

Brulin's team recommended switching the entire operation to Solstice® PF-HP, an HFO-based solvent already cleared for oxygen-service cleaning. By pairing qualified chemistry with hands-on validation, Brulin enabled the customer to move forward without interrupting critical OBOGS deliveries.

Regulatory Compliance

We helped the contractor find and secure a solvent with documented NAVSEA and MIL-STD-1330 acceptance.

Seamless Integration

We validated identical spray and vapor-degreasing parameters, eliminating re-qualification of equipment.

Operator Confidence

Together, we provided side-by-side pilot runs and residue analysis to confirm equal or better cleanliness before full changeover.

Realized Success

The contractor achieved a fully compliant, AK-225-free cleaning line with minimal disruption to their operation. Production was able to resume without delay, and the team retained its proven hardware while aligning with current environmental and military standards.
